About This Tool

Background Remover works entirely inside your browser — your photo never leaves your device. There is no upload step, no server processing, and no account required. The AI runs locally using WebAssembly, which means the result is as private as editing a photo on your own computer. Nothing is sent anywhere.

The tool gives you two modes to pick from before you upload: Portrait for people, selfies, and headshots, and General for products, animals, logos, and any non-person subject. Choosing the right mode upfront gives a noticeably better result — Portrait AI is trained specifically for hair, skin, and clothing edges, while General mode is trained to isolate any prominent subject regardless of what it is.

Once the background is removed, a comparison slider lets you drag back and forth to see the original next to the cutout. The Matte button lets you choose a preview background — white, black, gray, soft blue, cream, or any custom colour. The selected colour is baked directly into the downloaded PNG, so you get the exact output you see: a ready-to-use white-background photo for a passport form, or a transparent cutout for design work — no extra editing step needed.

Portrait mode has three edge quality settings inside the Adjust panel: Soft for feathered edges that work well for hair and loose clothing, Sharp for a clean binary cutout, and Smooth+ for maximum softness when the result will be placed over a very different background. The Cutoff and Softness sliders let you fine-tune where the AI draws the line between subject and background — helpful when the default keeps a little fringe or cuts slightly too close.

This tool is particularly useful for Indian passport photo preparation, government form uploads that require a white background, and e-commerce product photography for platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho. For passport photos, switch the Matte preview to white to confirm clean edges, then download and resize to the required 35×45 mm. For product listings, you can process an entire catalogue in one session — the AI model stays loaded between images, so each photo after the first is near-instant.

Unlike remove.bg, Canva, and similar tools, there are no credits, no free-tier limits, and no watermarks. The AI model caches in your browser after the first use, so return visits load faster too. For selfies turned into WhatsApp stickers, transparent-background profile photos, or product cutouts for social media, the transparent PNG output works directly in most apps and design tools.

How To Use

  1. 1. Pick the right panel: drop your photo on Portrait if it contains a person — or on General for products, animals, logos, and objects. Choosing before uploading gives a better result than switching after.
  2. 2. The AI processes your photo entirely on your device — no upload happens. Portrait mode completes in under 2 seconds on most devices; General mode takes a few extra seconds on first use while the model loads (~4.7 MB, cached after that).
  3. 3. Drag the comparison slider left and right to compare the original photo with the cutout. This is your main way to judge edge quality around hair and fine details.
  4. 4. Not satisfied with the result? Switch using the Portrait / General tabs at the top — the AI re-runs in seconds. The tool also switches automatically if Portrait mode doesn't detect a person in your photo.
  5. 5. Tap Adjust to open edge controls. For Portrait: choose Soft (best for hair), Sharp (crisp hard edges), or Smooth+ (maximum softness). Use the Cutoff and Softness sliders to fine-tune the boundary without re-running the AI.
  6. 6. Tap Matte to change the preview background — pick from Transparent, White, Light Gray, Soft Blue, Cream, Black, or choose any custom colour with the built-in colour picker. Check on white before downloading for passport or form photos.
  7. 7. Tap Download PNG to save your result. If Matte is set to Transparent, you get a transparent PNG. If you have selected a background colour, that colour is baked into the downloaded PNG — ready to use directly, no further editing needed.
  8. 8. Tap New Image to process another photo — the AI model stays loaded so the next image starts processing immediately.

What Makes This Different from Remove.bg and Canva

Most background removers upload your photo to their servers, cap free use, and require an account. Here is how this tool works differently:

  • Your photo never leaves your deviceNo upload, ever.
The AI runs inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your image data never reaches any server — safe for ID photos, Aadhaar images, PAN card scans, and private personal photos.
  • Unlimited use, no creditsProcess as many photos as you need.
No daily cap, no watermark, no account. After the first image loads the model, every subsequent photo in the same session processes without any reload delay.
  • Two purpose-built AI modesPortrait for people. General for everything else.
One AI model is tuned for hair, skin, and clothing edges. The other isolates any salient subject — product, animal, food item, or logo. Picking the right mode before uploading gives a measurably better result than a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • Edge quality controlsAdjust the result to suit your use case.
Soft edges for photos that will appear over a new background. Sharp for precise cutouts. Cutoff and Softness sliders to fine-tune — all without re-running the AI model.
  • Background colour preview — baked into the downloadWhat you see is what you get.
Six preset mattes plus a full colour picker. The selected colour is baked directly into the downloaded PNG — no extra step. Pick white, confirm the edges look clean, download, and submit. Or leave it on Transparent for a cutout PNG.
  • Works on mobile, no app installAndroid Chrome and iOS Safari both supported.
Tap to upload from your camera roll, process in-browser, download to your gallery. No installation, no permissions beyond photo access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this really free with no limits?

Yes — no account, no credits, no watermarks, no daily cap. The AI runs inside your browser so there are no server costs to limit your use. You can process as many photos as you need in a single session without restriction.

Does my photo get uploaded to a server?

No. Your photo never leaves your device. The AI model runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly — the same way a desktop app processes images locally. This makes it safe to use for Aadhaar card photos, PAN card scans, passport images, and any sensitive personal documents.

What is the difference between Portrait mode and General mode?

Portrait mode is trained specifically on people — it understands hair, face, skin, and clothing, and produces clean edges around fine hair and loose fabric. Use it for selfies, headshots, and passport photos. General mode identifies the most visually prominent subject in any image — a product, animal, logo, or food item — regardless of what that subject is. Use General for anything that is not a person.

The tool switched to General mode on its own — why?

When Portrait mode does not detect a person in your photo (fewer than 5% of pixels are classified as a human subject), the tool silently switches to General mode and re-processes — because General mode will give a better result for non-portrait images. A message appears after the switch explaining what happened. You can switch back to Portrait using the mode tabs at the top of the result at any time.

What are Soft, Sharp, and Smooth+ edge modes?

These three options appear in the Adjust panel in Portrait mode. Soft uses feathered edges based on the AI's confidence — best for hair, fur, and loose clothing. Sharp applies a hard binary cutout — clean and precise, good for subjects with well-defined edges. Smooth+ adds a blur pass on top of Soft edges — useful when placing the cutout over a very different background and you want seamless blending. Soft is the default and works for most photos.

Can I use this for Indian passport photos or government form uploads?

Yes — this is one of the most common uses. Drop your photo on Portrait, let the AI run, then tap Matte → White to preview on a white background. If the edges look clean, download the PNG. Indian passport photo size is 35×45 mm at 300 dpi — use the Image Resizer to crop to exact dimensions. For portals that require JPEG (not PNG), use the Image Compressor tool to convert the output. Resize to exact passport photo dimensions →

What image formats are supported for input and output?

Input: JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WebP. Output: PNG — always. If Matte is set to Transparent, the output is a transparent PNG (alpha channel preserved). If you have selected a background colour, that colour is baked into the PNG at download time — the file you get is a flat image on that background, ready to use directly. JPEG does not support transparency. If a platform requires JPEG, convert the downloaded PNG using any photo viewer or the Image Compressor tool.

Does it work on mobile phones?

Yes — tested on Android Chrome and iOS Safari. Tap either panel to pick a photo from your camera roll or gallery. Portrait mode completes in 2–5 seconds on mid-range Android phones. General mode takes 10–30 seconds on mobile on first use while the model loads, and is much faster on subsequent photos in the same session once the model is cached.

What types of photos give the best results?

The clearest results come from photos where the subject is well-lit and visually distinct from the background. A solid or softly blurred background, good lighting, and clear contrast between subject and background all help. Portrait mode handles even busy backgrounds well for people. General mode works best when the subject clearly stands out from its surroundings.

When does the AI not work well — what are the limitations?

The AI struggles in a few specific situations: (1) Very fine or wispy hair in backlit or windy conditions — some fringe strands may remain. (2) Transparent or semi-transparent subjects like glass, water, or sheer fabric. (3) Subjects that closely match the background colour — for example, a white product on a white wall. (4) Very small subjects in a large frame — try cropping tighter before removing the background. In these cases, use the Adjust sliders to improve the result, or try the other mode for comparison. A well-lit photo with clear separation from the background always gives the cleanest result.

Can I use this for product photos for Meesho, Amazon, or Flipkart?

Yes — use General mode for product photos. Drop your image on the General panel, wait for the result, and download the transparent PNG. Meesho, Amazon India, and Flipkart require product images on a white background — set Matte → White to preview, confirm the edges are clean, then download. You can process an entire catalogue in one session without any upload limits or account.

How is this different from remove.bg or Canva's background remover?

Many background removal tools process images on remote servers and may require an account, internet upload, or paid plans for higher-resolution exports and bulk editing. This tool works directly in your browser - your image stays on your device, no upload, no account, no limits. For everyday use cases like selfies, product photos, profile pictures, and passport photos, the results are often comparable to cloud-based tools. Extremely complex images (fine hair, transparent objects, crowded backgrounds, motion blur, etc.) may still perform better on high-compute server-side AI systems.

Can I use the result commercially?

Yes. The output is your own photo with the background removed — there are no restrictions on how you use it. The AI models used are Apache 2.0 licensed, which permits commercial use. Use the results for e-commerce listings, client deliverables, social media, or print — no attribution required.
